This is shocking and indicative that we are in a serious depression. A very good post. Thank you.
A good post, interesting and something to think about. I surely wish I had 100K to deposit ANYWHERE, or just hide under my mattress.... gah.
I don't know that I would go as far to say that we are in a depression (yet). The major reason this bank failed is that over 10% of its loans were "inactive", meaning they had gone bad. The rule of thumb is that a bank needs to keep that number under 5%, and ideally closer to 3%.

Another interesting factoid, that may or may not have anything to do with what happened, is that the guy who founded IndyMac is the same guy who founded CountryWide. As I said, this may just be a random factoid, but more than likely they were playing the "liar's loan" game and targeting the high rent area of Los Angeles County.

Unfortunately I don't think that this is the last bank the Feds are going to get to take over. But I don't think it is time to run around yelling the sky is falling either.
As I said, most of us are safe as long as we bank with a financial institution is FDIC insured (most are) and keep our accounts under the limits. So no need to stuff your mattress and ruin your sleep. :)

I'm glad you replied to Katiebell and me, Chris! I was stuffing my mattress. Unfortunately, I only had 100,000 pennies and let me tell ya- my bed was getting kinda lumpy! ; )

Seriously, though, this was an interesting post, something we should all know. Thanks.

The thought of sleeping on 100,000 pennies makes my back cringe.

I linked to the show - it wasn't up on the site when i originally posted this. It is about 35 minutes long.
Thanks. I'm going to have look today.
