know your free days
Did you know that most museums and similar places have days when they waive their admission fees? Well, they do.
A visit to their website should help you determine when you can visit without cost. Also if you are a student (as long as you have a valid ID), don't forgot to take advantage of those rates too. And seniors, you can usually get a discount as well.
Typically if a museum has a special exhibit these are not included in the free days. Nor is parking. Just something to keep in mind.
Also be aware that museums can change their free days, so be sure to check prior to your visit. Usually they won't change them last minute, but they can change during certain times of the year, like summer.
Finally, if you are really down on your luck, perhaps unemployed, you can give a donation less than posted on the admission sign. I believe in supporting the arts, but it also doesn't seem fair that when you have a free Wednesday to take in something beautiful but can't afford full price, that you shouldn't be turned away (and you shouldn't be).

One thing that bugs me is the last of military discounts almost universally... And student discounts can usually be found at other places local to a school.. movie theaters, etc.
I keep a personal list. And high up on my list? California ScienCenter and the accompanying Air and Space Exhibit next door. They request a donation, but it's not required. That is to say, depending on my personal cash situation - I adjust accordingly.
I also enjoy the LA County Museum of Art, which is free after 5 p.m and also the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
Another favorite is the MOCA, which is free on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
And my first favorite museum in California - the Norton Simon (which I think anyone who has seen the Rose Parade is familiar with - it's the big building with the large rose on the front) is free the first Friday of the month between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my big melon head.
I am so all about the fun and free/low cost.
